But Wolves, who lost centre-half Max Kilman to West Ham, have opened talks with O’Shea.

The Dubliner would link up with Ireland team-mate Matt Doherty at Molineux.

Meanwhile his new international boss yesterday made a surprising claim about the upcoming Nations League double-header.

Heimir Hallgrímsson has declared the Greece game is the bigger clash for him than England.

Hallgrímsson’s reign as Boys in Green gaffer begins against England on Saturday 7 in the Nations League with the Greeks in Dublin three days later.

But while Irish fans focus on that opening game, the new boss reckons the Greek game is a bigger one for his side’s development.

Speaking at the FAI Cup quarter-final draw, he said: “It’s been a quite a busy few weeks since I took over getting to know all the players.

“Watching them is the priority to look at the squad that is going to be for the England and Greece games.

“There is a lot of hype around the England game but for me the more important game is Greece.

“That’s the game that Ireland lost two games to last year, we need to do better in those matches against them.”

Hallgrímsson also said he intends to see more League of Ireland action in the coming weeks, as well as viewing St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers in Europe.

He added: “The atmosphere in the games, that was the standout for me.

“I’ve seen too few still but am planning to do more.

“I’ve been watching teams in the European games and it is impressive.
