New ‘tap to pay’ services launched for Irish businesses

New ‘Tap to Pay on iPhone’ services for Irish businesses have been announced by fintechs Stripe, Revolut and Square.

The new services will allow retailers to accept contactless payments directly from their iPhone, with no additional hardware required.

Buyers can complete payments by holding their contactless payment method such as a contactless credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or other digital wallet, near the seller’s iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed.

“Tap to Pay on iPhone allows Irish businesses of all sizes to begin taking payments in minutes and process transactions in seconds from anywhere in the store or on the go, with nothing more than an iPhone,” said John O’Beirne, Executive Director of Square in Europe.

Stripe said that its business customers can now accept in-person, contactless payments using an iPhone and a Stripe Terminal SDK.

“Tap to Pay on iPhone means Austrian, Czech, Swedish, and Irish businesses can now accept contactless payments with a device that many of us already have in our back pockets – an iPhone”, said David Kilbride, Head of Revenue and Growth at Stripe.

“For a small business, this easy-to-deploy technology means they can accept contactless payments from more customers in more places, and scale quickly,” Mr Kilbride said.

Revolut said it has enabled Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone contactless payment acceptance technology for Revolut Pro and Revolut Business customers across Ireland.

“The launch of Tap to Pay on iPhone allows us to offer greater choice for both consumers and merchants in Ireland,” said Alex Codina, GM of Merchant Acquiring at Revolut.

“We expect to see all kinds of businesses, from retail stores to barbershops and food stands, quickly start accepting in-person contactless payments with only an iPhone,” Mr Codina said.
