A suspected bomb which is believed to date back to World War Two has been discovered at a building site in Newtownards, County Down, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has said.

It was found at the Rivenwood housing development on Movilla Road.

The affected part of the site is currently unoccupied so no homes have been evacuated, a police spokesperson said.

No roads have been closed but police are at the scene with Ammunition Technical Officers and a cordon has been put in place.

The public have been asked to avoid the area and that updates will be provided in due course.

“I appreciate this may cause some disruption, however keeping people safe is paramount and we will not take any risks,” Insp McClintock said.

“I want to thank those who may be affected for their patience at this time.”
