Northern Ireland internationals Jackie Burns and Lauren Wade have been released by Reading following the club’s decision to drop out of the Championship and join the fifth tier of women’s football in England.

Burns and Wade are two of 16 professional players who have been released from their contracts by the cash-strapped club. A third Northern Ireland international, Rachel Dugdale, remains on the books of the Berkshire club.

Goalkeeper Burns made 16 appearances for Reading representing the club in both the Barclays Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship. Winger Wade played 37 times for the Royals in the second-tier.

In a statement the club said: “Each of these players has contributed significantly to the team, both on and off the field. Their commitment, talent, and passion have been instrumental in shaping the team’s identity and successes over the years. As they move on to new opportunities, we extend our heartfelt thanks and best wishes to each one.

“Thank you for your invaluable contributions to Reading FC Women. We will always remember your time with us fondly and support you in your future ventures.”

On Friday parents and players of multiple age‑group teams within Reading’s girls’ youth pathway were informed by club staff that their teams could not continue operating. Earlier in the day, staff learned of the club’s decision to withdraw from the Championship and likely redundancies, due to financial issues.

As a result of Reading’s demotion, the Championship will have just 11 teams in the league next season, with only one relegation place. The second tier intends to return to 12 clubs and two relegation places in the 2025/26 season.
