Northern Ireland hero Marissa Callaghan confirms call to step down as captain

The Cliftonville Ladies midfielder revealed in a statement that it was a decision that “was not taken lightly” on her part and believes the time is right for someone else in Tanya Oxtoby’s panel to wear the armband in both the present and future.

Callaghan, who has accumulated 89 caps – of which 52 came as skipper – led the national team at the 2022 Women’s European Championships under Kenny Shiels, a historic first appearance at a major women’s tournament Finals for Northern Ireland, and reflected fondly on the nation’s exploits in England among other memorable moments as having “changed the face of women’s football in Northern Ireland forever”.

Now, it will be the turn of one of her international team-mates to lead the side into battle ahead of the 2025 Women’s Euro qualifying double-header with Portugal on May 31 and June 4.

“I feel now is the right time for me to pass on the armband,” 38-year-old Callaghan, who will continue to play for Northern Ireland, explained.

“This decision was not taken lightly and I truly believe this is the best decision for not only myself but more importantly the squad.

“Leading this team for the past eight years has been an absolute honour and privilege.

“I am so proud of what we have achieved together, we have changed the face of women’s football in Northern Ireland forever.

“It’s now time for one of my team-mates to take on the role, make it their own and I’m so excited to see where the next eight years takes us.”

Oxtoby, who was confirmed as Shiels’ successor as Northern Ireland Women’s boss in September 2023, paid tribute to Callaghan’s achievements as captain and adds the matter was discussed at length between the pair.

“Marissa and I discussed the matter at length and I fully support her decision,” said the Australian.

“This team has had some truly memorable moments under her captaincy.”
