Jonny Evans, the Manchester United and Northern Ireland defender, has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect.
The 36-year-old centre-back made 107 appearances for his country since his debut in 2006, becoming Northern Ireland’s fourth-most capped men’s player in the process.
Evans was also part of Northern Ireland’s squad for the European Championship in 2016, reaching the last-16 at the country’s first major tournament in 30 years, and captained the side on 13 occasions.
“After much thought and consideration, and after 18 years, I feel like now is the right time to retire from international football. From my debut in 2006, when we defeated Spain, to my last game in June 2024, it has been a privilege,” Evans said.
“Putting on the green shirt 107 times and representing the people of Northern Ireland has been my biggest honour,” he added.
Michael O’Neill, Northern Ireland manager, said: “Managing Jonny has been an absolute privilege. He is one of our greatest players as his 107 international caps clearly shows.
“Jonny always showed great leadership but also great humility and always looked out for the rest of the squad. He always loved playing for his country and we will miss his quality and presence in the games ahead.”
Evans returned to boyhood club United last summer as a free agent, having previously left Old Trafford to join West Bromwich Albion in 2015, and made 30 appearances in all competitions last season.
The 36-year-old’s displays amid a defensive injury crisis were enough to earn a one-year contract extension until June 2025.
