SWIMMING
We knew that Team Ireland had great potential in the pool at these Olympic Games but it was perhaps bold to imagine it would be like this.
Tonight Mona McSharry swims in here 100M Breastroke Final as the second quickest qualifier for the final and in this morning’s semi-finals for the Women’s 400M Individual medley and the Men’s 800 M Ellen Walshe and Daniel Wiffen secured their places at the very highest level as well.
Never before have Ireland qualified more than a single swimmer for a Final at an Olympic Games. Three days in and we have already secured three finals.
Wiffen secured the middle lane as the fastest qualifier from his swim this morning and will be back with a favourites chance of Gold tomorrow.
Walsh will join McSharry as a finalist tonight, entering the water at 7.30 PM
Adding cream on top Danielle Hill also advanced to her semi final in the 100M Backstroke that will take place tonight at 7:57
HOCKEY
Ireland went down to a 2-1 defeat to Australia, the third best side in the world this morning.
SAILING
There was a weather delay for our Skiff sailors, Séan Waddilove and Rob Dickson who lie second in the overall positions after yesterday’s three races and who will hopefully still get to race in three today.
EQUESTRIAN
The Eventing team of Susie Berry and Austin O’Connor with Aoife Clark, who replaced Sarah Ennis are currently contesting the final leg with the show jumping at the Palace of Versailles. Aoife Clark was up first and had just the one pole down. Susie Berry soon followed and also incurred just four faults for a finish of 31st overall individually.
Austin O’Connor on Colorado Blue had two fences down in his round to see the team finish ninth overall in the team event having earlier today incurred a penalty for replacing Sarah Ennis.
O’Connor did enough to make it to the Individual Show jumping final later today for the top 25 finishers.
ROWING
The Lightweight Women’s Double of Margaret Cremen and Aoife Casey recorded a convincing win in their repechage this morning. Getting cleanly off the start, Ireland held a good position moving to the front ahead of the Canadian double The Chinese double caught some water in the opening strokes which led to a boat stopping crab, ruling them out of the top runners. Through the second quarter of the race, Ireland settled into their rhythm, moving efficiently in the water, increasing their lead as they went.
