Packers are reportedly set for the first NFL matchup of its kind in 2025

Must read

Since the NFL officially established the International Series back in 2007, a total of 48 regular-season games have been contested outside the United States, with 39 in London, five in Mexico City, three in Germany, and one in Brazil.

While not an official part of the series, an additional six have been played in Canada, all of which were hosted by the Buffalo Bills as part of the now-defunct Toronto Series.

Of these 54 games, the Green Bay Packers have appeared in just two of them.

In 2022, they served as the host team in London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and took a 27-22 defeat at the hands of the New York Giants.

And in Week 1 of this 2024 season, of course, the Packers served as the visitors in the first-ever game played in Brazil, taking a 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Sao Paulo’s Arena Corinthians.

While the NFL has already officially announced plans to expand the International Series to include a game in Madrid, Spain, in 2025, there are also tentative plans for a regular-season contest to be held in Dublin, Ireland. And according to reports, the Packers are in line to be one of the teams involved in this first-ever regular-season matchup.

The Packers are reportedly in line to play the Steelers in Dublin in 2025

While the Packers have appeared in two international games in the last three years, the Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t traveled outside the U.S. since taking a 34-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at London’s famed Wembley Stadium in 2013.

Per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are expecting to be a part of the International Series in 2025, and the thinking is that the game will be at Croke Park in Dublin, as the organization has strong ties to Ireland. The late Dan Rooney, the team’s longtime owner and chairman, even served as the U.S. Ambassador to the country from 2009 to 2012.

As for their opponent, Steelers insider Noah Strackbein of Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Packers are expected to take on that role. Pittsburgh would serve as the home team, while Green Bay would once again serve as the visitor.

As mentioned, this would be the first-ever regular-season NFL game played in Ireland, but it wouldn’t be the first game contested there, as the Steelers and the Chicago Bears engaged in a preseason battle at Croke Park in 1997.
