History beckons for Paul O’Donovan on Day 7 of Paris 2024.
The man from Skibbereen can become the first ever Irish Olympian to medal at three Games if he and Fintan McCarthy can achieve a podium finish in the lightweight double sculls final.
The reigning Olympic champions will be the team to beat at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on Friday morning.
There will be Irish involvement in no less than five Olympic finals on Friday as a memorable opening week of Paris 2024 comes to a close.
Also taking to the water and hoping for medal success will be Margaret Cremen and Aoife Casey in the women’s lightweight double skulls and Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney in the men’s pair.
Irish sailors Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove’s Olympic medal mission was twice postponed due to a lack of wind in Marseille yesterday.
The Irish duo are second overall and well placed to contend for a place on the podium when the race hopefully resumes at 12.13pm on Friday.
Ireland’s showjumpers will compete in the team event final after a fine performance in yesterday’s semi-final.
Shane Sweetnam, Daniel Coyle and Cian O’Connor finished in sixth place to comfortably qualify.
Day 7 will also mark the beginning of track-and-field at these Games, with Andrew Coscoran, Luke McCann and Cathal Doyle competing in the men’s 1500m heats, which begin just after 10am.
The evening session will see Jodie McCann compete in the Women’s 5,000m heats while the mixed 4x400m relay team are also in action.
