And so I have to weigh that up against the fact that I’ve always played for Ireland and so it is tough. Whatever I do, I know my decision is going to upset some people but I just hope the vast majority will understand,” said the 4x major winner.

Many wondered if he would leave his Irish roots to play for Great Britain in the 2016 Rio Olympics, as he was eligible to play for Ireland and Great Britain. Northern Ireland isn’t part of the Irish Republic and is part of the UK. But the 35-year-old, 18 months later, turned down the opportunity to represent Team GB, avoiding potential disappointment for his Irish supporters. “Thinking about all the times that I played as an amateur for Ireland and as a boy and everything, I think for me it’s the right decision to play for Ireland in 2016,” said the Northern Irishman.

Graeme McDowell, a fellow Northern Irish golfer, offered compelling reasons for McIlroy’s decision. He said, “I grew up wanting to wear the green blazer with a shamrock on it, so it makes sense that the best players, whether they be from north or south of the border, should want to represent Ireland in the Olympic Games.” He emphasized the intrinsic link between golf and Ireland.
