Seamus Power’s 2024 has come to a premature end after he was forced to withdraw from the RSM Classic on the PGA Tour due to a back injury.
Power had completed just four holes of his second round where he had one par, a bogey, a birdie and a quadruple bogey eight before he retired early.
The West Waterford man will take the winter to recover and when he does return in 2025 he can still look forward to two Signature Events as he remains on course to book his spot at the Genesis Invitational and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Ranked 55th in the FedEx Cup Fall series he is projected to remain there with players ranked 51-60 assured of two Signature Event appearances.
Power has endured a down turn in form since a hip injury plagued the second half of his 2023 season and following a T31 finish at the Pebble Beach pro-am this season he slipped outside the top-100 in the Official World Golf Ranking and has not been able to break back in since.
The two-time PGA Tour winner has registered just one top-10 on the PGA Tour this season, coming at the FedEx St Jude Championship and that came during a good run of form towards the end of the year where he also finished 11th in back to back events, 13th and 23rd at last week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Power is currently ranked 18th in the world and knows one high finish will get him back to where he needs to be which is inside the top-100 and trending back towards the top-50 to get into the major championships again.
Although that will have to wait until the new year.
“I still haven’t had those high finishes, which has been a little disappointing,” he said. “Two goals for the fall was try to win an event and to lock up that top 60. Getting in Pebble and LA will be huge,” Power said ahead of the event.
