It’s 8.40 am on a Monday morning on the set of Virgin Media One’s Ireland AM, and already we’ve covered sport, the ­Hezbollah Israel conflict, mortgage rate rises, breastfeeding orangutans, and awkward relations with in-laws. A slot needs to be moved around, a guest is pushed back. Alan and Tommy are eating frittatas from the cooking slot.

I’m sitting on a high stool in the only corner of the studio that is not on camera. There’s a large props table beside me, upon which presenter Muireann O’Connell has a make-up bag for touch ups, and a bowl of breakfast.
