Cheltenham-winning racehorse owner, Dermot Cox, passed away this week

Tributes have poured in for well-known Kildare businessman and Cheltenham-winning racehorse owner, Dermot Cox.
Mr Cox of Rosetown Stud, Athgarvan in Co Kildare passed away peacefully at the Blackrock Clinic surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 30.
As the former owner of Cox’s Cash & Carry in Newbridge, Co Kildare before it was sold in 2022, Mr Cox was a pillar of the Kildare community.
“We have great memories of Dermot over many years of trading in his Cash and Carry in Newbridge, where he always went the extra mile to please his customers,” recalled one mourner on RIP.ie.
“No transaction was complete until he discussed the runners and riders of the day. Rest in peace Dermot you were a Winner Alright.”
As well as being a successful business owner, Mr Cox had a passion for horses and horse racing. As a leading racehorse owner and breeder, he was well-respected in the horse racing community in Ireland and beyond. He played an instrumental role at Punchestown Racecourse as former Vice Chairman of the racecourse.
Mr Cox also had many wins with his horses over the years including in Cheltenham in 2003 with Back In Front.
“Desperately sorry to learn of Dermot’s passing, we extend deepest sympathies to all the Cox family and to Dermot’s very many friends in your great loss,” said Ceann Comhairle, Sean O’Fearghail, as he paid tribute to Mr Cox.
“Dermot Cox was a remarkable businessman, wise, astute and far-sighted. He was also an absolute gentleman and a thoroughly good and kind person. Reunited with Anne and all his departed loved ones may he have eternal peace and rest. God bless and comfort all you who mourn.”
Mr Cox was the loving husband of the late Ann and a much loved father of David, Louise, Aoife and Patrick.
He will repose at his residence for family and friends on Friday, August 2 from 2pm to 6pm. Mr Cox’s funeral mass will take place on Saturday, August 3 at 11am in St. Conleth’s Parish Church, Newbridge with burial afterwards in St. Conleth’s Cemetery, Newbridge.
