Team Ireland secured two emphatic wins at the 2024 World Youth Championships in Budva, Montenegro today.

Ryan Jenkins (63.5kg) and Adam Olaniyan (92+kg) were both boxing their opening bouts of the championship today against Estonia’s Igor Makarov and Mexico’s Eduardo Ramirez Contreras, respectively.

Neither bout went the distance.

Jenkins forced numerous standing counts throughout his fight, which was stopped in his favour in the second round.

Olaniyan’s contest, meanwhile, lasted just 58 seconds after his opponent appeared to break his nose.

Ryan next meets Israel’s A Rahal and Adam will face Hungary’s Brendon Nemeth.

Elsewhere, two other Irish boxers competing controversially as neutrals won their bouts.

Marcus Barrett defeated Cyprus’ Mahmoud Karnaba by stoppage and Padraig Corduff won a points decision against Hassan Selimovic from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Irish boxers competing as neutrals are funded by the IBA, the Russian-led global organisation mired in controversy.

Last month at an EGM, the IABA voted to remove references to the IBA from their constitution to help boxing’s chances of competing at the 2026 Olympic games in Los Angeles.

Ireland are the only nation in the competition to have boxers competing as neutrals.

Due to the weight division and draw, there is no possibility of team Ireland boxer competing against the Irish boxers competing as neutrals.
