Last month a buzzing batch of over 200 contestants began their hopeful journey of conquest at Sligo Tennis Club competing in their annual flagship event, The West. Delighted faces and fine weather made for a fantastic atmosphere and some superb tennis. With 15 events in all it proved to be a busy weekend with 250 matches running over 13 courts. It coincided brilliantly with the Queen Maeve festival and meant that STC could show Sligo off its best light promoting music, food and heritage in typical ‘Sligo Style’ to our visiting players who travelled from 41 clubs all over Ireland. The club are very grateful to our sponsors Brian Mullins Insurance & Damien Tansey & Associates for their continued support. They also wish to thank their West Committee who work tirelessly to ensure the weekend runs smoothly and efficiently.

Up next was the Connacht league Final. This was spear headed by Mark Smyth from GLTC who was ably supported by the Sligo Tennis Committee. Players from all over Connacht at varying grades battled it out for a much coveted spot in the Connacht – Munster Final. Sligo secured a spot in Grade 2 Mixed, Grade 3 Mixed and Men’s Doubles Grade 5. These teams will now go forward to represent their province In Nenagh. The club wish them every success in these competitions which will take place in September.

Trathnóna Gaeilge was held on June 7. Bhí an craic agus spoirt againn um trathnóna le alán daoine ag labhairt I bhfad níos mó ná cúpla focal. It was a wonderful event and demonstrated how being active in a language takes the work out of learning and promotes enjoyment. Míle buíochas do Cnag & An Ciste Spreagtha agus ucht an tacaiocht. Tá súil againn go mbeimid in ann é a dheanamh gach bhliain.

The Team Event is also well underway with 48 players vying for success over the month of June. This event crosses over all grades and levels and is a wonderful way to include newer and less experienced members to the club scene. Many thanks are due to The Sligo Park who sponsor this event for Sligo Tennis Club.

July and August also promise to be busy with their Annual Wimbledon Fundraiser for the Hospice, Club Day, The Jnr West of Ireland, The Sunny Summer Sunday League and of course Ladies Day.
