Stephanie Meadow to lead out Ireland bid in first round of Olympic golf competition

Must read

Meadow will go off in the first group of the day at 8:0am Irish time while Leona Maguire tees off with England’s Georgia Hall and South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai in the third last group at 11:17am.

Reigning Olympic champion Nelly Korda is off at 8:55 am with Korea’s Jin Young Ko and China’s Ruoning Yin.

New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, who won silver in Rio in 2016 and the bronze behind Korda and Japan’s Mone Inami in Tokyo three years ago, plays with Japan’s Miyu Yamashita and Sweden’s Maja Stark.

“To have been able to medal in the past two Games, I feel very fortunate about that and excited to give it a good run again this week,” said Ko, who expects a tough test at Le Golf National.

“Tricky,” she said of the course. “I think it’s going to be the toughest Olympics as of yet. Rio and Tokyo had a very different feeling. This is a very different golf course to that as well.

“When I saw the men play and the scores that they were shooting I was very impressed because that wasn’t the initial kind of scores that I was expecting.

“So I’m just going to hopefully play strategically but at the same time aggressively because all of us that are competing in a tournament, and it’s a slightly different mindset to our usual event on tour.”
