Among the teams in action on Friday are defending champions England, who find themselves on the verge of a first-round exit, as well as Group C leaders Afghanistan, who will be hoping to secure their progress into the Super 8s.
Here’s a quick look at the matches in store on the 14th matchday in the ongoing tournament:
Match 28, England vs Oman
Defending champions England find themselves facing an early exit in the ongoing tournament after their opening match against Scotland ended in a washout and the Jos Buttler-led side suffered a 36-run defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Australia.
They’ll be hoping to revive their campaign by collecting their first victory of the tournament against Oman, who are already eliminated from the race to the Super 8s with three defeats in as many outings.
England vs Oman will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua at 12.30 AM IST.
Match 29, Afghanistan vs Papua New Guinea
Afghanistan, meanwhile, will be hoping to regain the top spot in Group C from co-hosts West Indies and seal their place in the Super 8s with a victory when they face Papua New Guinea in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday.
The Afghans enter the match as the runaway favourites given their Net Run Rate of +5.225 that is currently the best so far in the 20-team tournament, thrashing 2021 runners-up New Zealand by 84 runs along the way. They will, however, not take Papua New Guinea lightly given the manner in which the Assad Vala-led side gave the Windies a scare earlier in the tournament. A defeat for PNG will officially knock them out from the tournament.
Afghanistan vs Papua New Guinea will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad at 6 AM IST.
Match 30, USA vs Ireland
The upcoming Group A clash between USA and Ireland will be crucial for both teams as far as advancing to the second round is concerned with Pakistan also keeping a close eye on the match that will take place in Florida.
On paper, Ireland should be counted as the favourites given they’re a Full Member and co-hosts USA are not. However, it’s the USA that enter Friday’s clash as the team favoured to emerge triumphant given how they’ve punched above their weight so far in the tournament.
Not only did they defeat neighbours Canada in the tournament opener on 1 June, they would later stun Pakistan at the same venue in a match that went into a Super Over. The Americans, however, would suffer their first defeat of the tournament with a seven-wicket loss against India in New York.
USA vs Ireland will be played at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida at 8 pm IST.
