Figueira da Foz is famous for its quality of beaches, gastronomy and great nightlife.

To get to the hidden gem, the best route is to fly through Dublin Airport to Porto, which is located 76 miles from the little-known sunshine spot. 

There are train routes departing from Porto to Figueira da Foz.

And the trip takes about three hours and costs around €14 for a one-way ticket.

The train station is located only 1km away from the city centre. 

Figueira da Foz is one of the most popular cities to visit in Portugal, and it is recommended that you spend at least three days there to fully appreciate everything it has to offer. 

Many Portuguese and northern Europeans spend their summer here – with average temperatures of around 29C.

Figueira da Foz is situated where the Mondego River meets the Atlantic and the mountains of the Serra da Boa Viagem shelter it.

This coastal settlement was a major deep-sea fishing port before the Portuguese spot became a popular holiday destination. 

It is home to Portugal’s largest beach, Claridade, another popular spot with its fascinating landscape – perfect for surfing, windsurfing, sailing or rowing.

It is a 3km stretch nick-named ‘Rainha das Praias’, with a long expanse of white sand lined with cafes and apartments. 

Buarcos is one of Europe’s widest beaches because of its longest waves, and it is one of the nicest spots on Figueira da Foz.

It is named after a traditional fishing village at the bay’s northern end and is considered a perfect spot for seafood and bars.

This Portuguese spot is more than just a beach holiday destination – the city also offers one of the greatest entertainment centres at night with its wide variety of clubs, bars and terraces.

And a pint costs around €2. 

Figueira da Foz is also close to Coimbra, a true gem you cannot miss. 

It is one of the most important cities in Portugal, and it is beautifully embraced by the Mondego River.
