The Northern Irish football community has been struck by tragedy following the sudden death of Michael Newberry, a 27-year-old defender for Cliftonville FC. Newberry, a key figure in Cliftonville’s squad this season, passed away unexpectedly, leaving teammates, fans, and the wider footballing world in shock.

Cliftonville, currently fifth in the Northern Ireland Premiership, confirmed the heartbreaking news, expressing their grief and extending condolences to Newberry’s family and friends.

“We express our deepest sympathies to Michael’s family and friends, as well as his teammates past and present. Rest in peace, Newbs,” the club stated.

Newberry had been an integral part of the team, making 24 appearances across all competitions this season. The cause of his death remains unknown.
