Wicklow-Wexford election candidate calls for ‘urgent investment’ in transport infrastructure

Fine Gael’s general election candidate for Wicklow-Wexford, Brian Brennan, has been sounding the alarm on the “urgent need” for significant investment in transport infrastructure in Arklow and across the southeast.

Highlighting the added pressure of the future housing boom in Arklow upon completion of its wastewater treatment plant, and a region already grappling with increasing population growth and a burgeoning demand for reliable transport, Mr Brennan has emphasised that “years of neglect in this sector” can no longer be overlooked.

“Commuters in Arklow deserve a transport system that meets their needs,” Brennan commented.

“Currently, the train journey from Arklow to Connolly Station takes approximately two hours, a service that falls far short of what is required.

“We need more trains during peak times to facilitate the growing number of commuters, and it’s imperative that we address the ongoing delays caused by issues on the Bray Head coastal line.

“These delays undermine the reliability of our rail service and require a long-term solution.”

Mr Brennan also noted the pressing need for investment in the bus service, pointing out that there is currently no dedicated bus corridor on the N11 until Loughlinstown.

“This lack of infrastructure adds to the congestion we see on the N11, which is already overstretched,” he continued.

“Investing in our public transport will not only improve services but also help alleviate traffic and reduce commute times, which are currently adding two to three hours to the daily lives of commuters.

“The goal should be to provide an efficient and effective public transportation system that encourages users to shift from their vehicles, thereby reducing their carbon footprint,” he added.

“However, without immediate investment, we will not be able to achieve this vision.”
