DANIEL Wiffen has landed the 2024 Northern Ireland BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
The Antrim man bagged two medals at last summer’s Olympic Game in Paris.
Wiffen made history by winning the gold medal in the men’s 800m freestyle, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 7:38.19.
23-year-old Wiffen made victory as he became the first Irish male swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal.
The Armagh man added a Bronze Medal in the 1500m Freestyle in the French capital to top off a stunning year.
And now in recognition of his outstanding achievements, Wiffen been awarded the BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year.
Speaking after the news of the gong win, Wiffen admitted that he was shocked with the recognition.
The Magheralin man stated: “It’s amazing. Sports Personality of the Year is pretty cool—it’s one of the biggest awards in sport.
“I didn’t even know; I’m quite surprised.”
Wiffen went on to add that he intends to full kick back and enjoy the festive season.
He admitted that it’s now time for him to enjoy the celebrations with his family and friends after a hugely successful but gruelling season.
He added: “It’s going to be a great Christmas in our house, and I’ll add it to the trophy cabinet.”
“It’s been such a magical year. Christmas time makes it even better to celebrate with family.
“We all worked towards this goal of winning the Olympics, and we did it.
“Now it’s time to celebrate.”
