Winger Admits Goal Of Ireland Call-Up A Driving Factor In Scottish Premiership Move | Balls.ie

Must read

Looking at the Ireland squad in recent years, there was a bit of concern when it came to the lack of depth in the wide positions.

Stephen Kenny made this point soon after taking the job, with blooding new wingers something that he made a priority during his tenure. In fact, his move to a 3-5-2 system largely came down to having too few options out wide.

This issue has eased somewhat in recent times. The emergence of Chiedozie Ogbene has made a huge difference in this regard, while the likes of Mikey Johnston, Sammie Szmodics, Finn Azaz, and Jason Knight can also contribute in that area.

Another talented wide player is now also targeting an Ireland call-up.

Will Ferry is someone who has represented Ireland since U18s, earning caps all the way up to U21 level.

Born in Bury, he first signed up as a youth player at his local club before joining Southampton in 2017. He would never manage to make a first team breakthrough at the St Mary’s, going on to sign for Cheltenham Town in 2022.

He would put together a couple of good campaigns at the club, and with his contract expiring at the end of last season, he would opt to sign for Dundee United on a free transfer.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Ferry admitted that earning a call-up to the senior Ireland squad was one of the driving factors behind the decision.

I’ve always watched the Old Firms! I also watched quite a bit of Dundee United last season to be fair, especially the Friday night games.

There’s big teams in the league, coverage of them playing on Sky Sports, I want to test myself and get myself that kind of coverage. It’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down – as soon as it came up it was a no-brainer.

I would love to get called up to the full Republic of Ireland squad but you’ve got to perform first and see what comes with it.

If your getting the coverage and catching the eye on TV and in front of fans then there’s something else that comes with it but you’ve got to perform first. I played through some of the ages, 19s, 21s – I’d like to think I did relatively well.

It’s something I would love to do again, it would be ideal. It’s a big selling point of being up here and at such a big club, it’s about impressing here first.

Dundee United earned promotion to the Scottish Premiership in recent weeks, having finished top of the Scottish Championship. They will be hoping to consolidate their place in the top flight during the upcoming campaign.

A few Scottish based players have been brought into the Ireland squad in recent seasons, with Mikey Johnston and Jamie McGrath two of the more well-known examples. Will Ferry is clearly hoping that he can go down that route in the near future.
