Danielle Hill failed to qualify from her heat of the women’s 100m freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest on Wednesday as fellow Ireland swimmer Shane Ryan smashed his own longstanding Irish record to advance to the semi-finals.
In the last of the morning’s men’s 100m freestyle heats, Ryan recorded a time of 46.23 seconds to finish third and set the sixth fastest qualifying time.
His previous Irish record was a time of 46.68, which he set at the Irish Championships five years ago.
The 30-year-old will be back in action in the semi-finals at the Duna Arena on Wednesday evening.
Also on the second day of competition, Larne swimmer Hill clocked 53.66 to finish eighth in her heat.
The Olympian had also failed to progress past the heats of the women’s 100m backstroke on day one, finishing 18th overall.
Niamh Coyne and Eoin Corby also failed to progress, Coyne taking ninth in her heat of the 100m breaststroke in 1:07.40 and Corby the same position in his 100m breaststroke heat.
