Ireland’s largest and most prestigious Windsurfing event, Mayo Mayhem, is set to kick off tomorrow morning in Belmullet.

The event is being held at Drum Beach, Belmullet, Co Mayo.

The current plan is to run the full professional fleet first followed by the amateurs. The first heat will begin at 8am.

The event is part of the World Windsurfing Tour and attracts the best windsurfers from around the globe who come to try their skills in the wild north Atlantic to secure points for the Windsurfing World Tour.

This event is always a visual spectacle, as athletes compete against massive waves in storm force wind.

Competitors are scored on their extreme jump and wave riding skills which has spectators calling it a mix of surfing and motor cross on water.

This year’s event is sponsored by RWE renewables who share a passion for protecting the environment whilst harnessing the power of wind energy that is so abundant in county Mayo.
